Ken Kennell

George Seurat developed the painting technique of pointillism in the late 1800’s.The painter using this technique paints tiny dots of pure color close together on the canvas to create a picture. The use of these dots allows the eye of the viewer to blend the colors and see an image where there seems to be light and movement on the canvas, but that is just is the perception of the viewer. While the results are beautiful and many painters have tried the technique, few have perfected it. You may have seen pointillist works by Vincent van Gogh or Camille Pissarro. The technique requires skill, patience, and many hours of work as well as the intuitive sense of blending color by vision instead of a stroke of the brush. Ken Kennell is a contemporary master of the technique. Ken lives in Pukalani, Maui, Hawaii where his home and studio are on the side of a dormant volcano and offer amazing views of sugar cane fields and beaches on both the north and south side of the island. Much of his work depicts the grace and lore of the Hula dancer. We met with Ken at his studio where he welcomed us to wander through his home to enjoy his work. I was fascinated to stand back away from a painting and see the vivid composition and then get close to the painting and see just dots. I was amazed by the depth of dimension that appears with this technique as well as the vividness of light and movement I could see. Ken’s interviews reflect his inspirations and his passion for his work.
